As the name suggest, that magnificent tongue is how they got their name.
Other names and references include BTS, Bluey, Blue Tongue Lizard, Panana in Indonesia.
Nicknames include Potato, Sausage and Mini Garbage Disposal.
Though, there are many different Subspecies. This site is dedicated only to the Indonesians.
If your skink has mostly black legs, black lines between the scale plating on top of their head, less vibrant tongues and a lot of black on the belly (though not always). Chances are, You are the Proud owner of an Indonesian skink. The sad Truth is that these guys get passed off as Eastern's or Northern's due to the seller just trying to make a profit or just the lack of knowledge. Either way, Do not be disheartened, No Matter What You Hear! These little guys and girls make Absolutely Wonderful pets. Maybe, you did want the Indonesian... I don't blame you as these Lizards are much more symmetrical. Which in my opinion, is much more pleasing aesthetically.
Indonesia is the largest country located in southeast Asia.
This is a country of beauty and is made up of more than 17,000 islands.
Indonesia is humid year round, ranging from 70% to 90% Humidity.
Indonesia does not have Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
Rather, they only have Wet and Dry seasons. Temperatures range from 74.3F to 82.4F on average all year long.
There are no laws in Indonesia which prohibits the exportation of reptiles.
Most, but not all Indonesian BTS that you see in pet stores are wild caught & imported.
The reason that they are normally Cheaper is due to the fact that when you do buy a captive bred, you are also buying the service for nurturing that creature. Which does not normally occur with our indo's. We will tackle wild caught/ captive bred in a later topic.
If you do not know which skink that you have, hopefully The Main 6 Types of Indonesian skinks will help you out. Due to the tropical climate that they come from, I always recommend Starting around 80% Humidity until you are positive.
Temps can run 74F to 83 F on the cool side of your enclosure and 90F to 105F on your warm side. You want to try to have between a 10 and 15 degree Gradient (Difference) . Use a heat gun if possible. Recommendations are as follows. Humidity levels.
These skinks have a lot of black. They are the same Genieous as the Halmahera . Due to coloring and the locale, Classics tend to show more Yellows and green. They also can have thin, vertical patterning running through the scales almost like lines. They also have a bunch of black freckling on most of their backs.
Again, here is another example of a classic blue tongue skink. Also, with these guys you will notice that on some of them that the head color is lighter than the rest of their body.
The classic can reach up to 24 inches in length.
THE KEI ISLAND
They are the wildest looking of all Indo's and I mean that, in the very best possible way.
You will find with these that they can range in a variety of colors.
The speckling is fantastic with these guys. You can find them in Red, Orange, Green, Yellow, Brown, and I have even seen one that looked almost gray. These are the thickest of the Indo's.
Kei Island BTS will typically reach between 18 inches and 24 inches in length.
Maerauke's are naturally calmest of the Indo's. They are the longest. Their abdomen is what really makes the difference here.
These Lizards can reach between 26 inches and 30 inches in length.
Known as the pale skink in some parts of Indonesia, these beautiful creatures do have lighter scale patterns. You will usually find them in this salmon to light red color. Though, you can find them darker and closer looking to a Halmahera hue. However, the Merauke normally have a darker vertical line on the back of it's neck. Though similar, it is quite different then that of a halma's. A merauke's vertical line does not normally form a cross with the first band, and it's usually a bit lighter than a halma's.
The Merauke will usually have a salmon colored or red belly. The black patterning is sometimes what throws people off. One of the most common questions is, "Is this a Merauke, or a Halmahera"? It just takes a little bit of studying, to know the difference between the two.
THE TANIMBAR ISLAND
In my opinion, the yellow Tanimbar is one of the most beautiful BTS on the planet. Absolutely Stunning!!!
You can find these skinks in a variety of color as well, from Yellow, Green, almost Blue and Silverish. These lizards are a little unique because you can find them with black eyes.
These Lizards are stout but will normally reach about 18 inches in length.
These BTS are more muscular on average compared to any of the other of the Indo Bluey's. They are also rumored to have the worst temperaments. I actually know a couple of people with Tanimbars and this is not the case with theirs. Most Attitude's can be corrected through proper husbandry, which we will discuss in another topic.
THE IRIAN JAYA
Here we have, what is known as the weirdo of the Indo's. It's really not that they are all that weird, but the fact that they are the least understood in the scientific community. These lizards can become a good size, as they can reach to be between 15 inches and 30 inches in length.
The cool thing is that the Irian Jaya may have a tongue almost as vibrant blue as their Aussie counterparts.
As far as coloring goes they can come in a variety as well. Most skinks stripes can be a telltale sign. Their stripes can be Orange, Red, Brown, Greyish. Their main color can vary as well. Their bellies vary in color but pink will be the most common.
Honestly, if you don't know what kind of skink you have but you know it's definitely not one of the other's.
You may have an Irian jaya.
These guys are Awesome!!! You really need to take a look at any and all skink's out in the sun to really get those colors poppin'. These Lizards can reach between 18 inches and 22 inches in length. Most Halma's have a distinct vertical line down their neck and it will normally form a cross. Unlike the Merauke who has a similar marking, the Halma's will be dark and thicker. Also, there is no mistaking the solid black shoulder pads on these lizards. A lot of halma's have silver on the neck, on both sides at the base
( bottom of the sides).
Most Halma's will have solid black or black bands with brown speckles.
The main color can consist of Red, Brown and Tan. These lizards can even have a few yellow scales, not solid like the classic's. People are often confused after owning a Halma from a young age due to the Blushing on the under side of their neck that can get pretty dark red. No worries though, this is completely natural.
Halma's are also the smallest framed skinks out of the all Indo's that we know about.
Axanthic's are not albino's.
Axanthic means that they are lacking the red, and yellow pigmentation. These creatures are black and white with maybe some grey.
One of the most Gorgeous Bluey's on the planet!!!
You may very well have a black and white BTS, but it does not mean that is is an Axanthic. It could be a Snow, meaning that it still has orange or brown eyes.
An Axanthic has jet Black or dark grey eyes.
Here is an example of those luscious grey eyes. What a beauty!!!
These are the Holy Grail of all Indo's.
I won't really go over the cost of most of these BTS.
A normal Halmahera's selling price usually starts around $200.
An Axanthic starts between,
$500 and $700.
Big difference huh?
This is the typical color of an Axanthic's belly, though you can find some normal Halma's with the same white bellies.
These guys never seem to amaze me.
Halma's can be very red.
Red and Bold.
Just absolutely stunning!!!
